Do we still get to use mercenaries? When would be the best time to get them if they're useful?

I would say that mercenaries(mercs) are still very valuable. However, the payoff for using them is one that takes time to evolve, since you need to level them and have at least 3 in order to effectively run remote missions.

The chests you get from clearing the remote missions give you a nice boost to gold, materials, and can get you cool things like conversion gems and exploration plates.

They can also be valuable for solo/duo content, since some of them, like Nerwin and Varnak, have buffs that can boost your damage by quite a bit. They don't do much damage on their own, but it is entertaining to watch them smack mobs around.

I've found the best way to get mercs is to run Starlight Garden and use nightmare points to get the unique-grade pouches. There is also a time-limited event coming up that will get you merc pouches for clearing the new TKN.
