  • Help with mains plz

tl;dr I like the playstyle of all the class in-game (with a few exceptions *cough Black Mara cough*), but I don't have the ability to fund that many characters. I need help on what to pick

    Full version:
I have a hard time defining my playstyle in games. It's like, general enough I can play most characters with some degree of fun, but none of them truly excite me and make me want to play every day for the rest of my life. At this point, my life on DN is level a char to 95, play it for a week, have some fun, repeat. So... yeah. I can't find that class that I really like, and this could be due to many factors:
    • I haven't tried all the classes yet. This includes all Sorcs (except Black Mara which I hate how it plays even if it is one of the top DPS), Defensio, Paladins post-awakening, Most spin-off classes (except AH and EO), Kalis (except EO), Acrobats, Engineers, Lunar Knight post-awakening, and.. yeah. I've seen videos of all their playstyles and I'm like "I love how cool that class looks but, I've got this and that with my *current* main and I don't want to have to start again.
    • There's enjoyable parts to all classes for me. There are some things in all the classes that I truly enjoy, but most of the time it's very short-lived enjoyment.
    • I'm perpetually broke. Except for the unusual gold mine worth of mats (aka the 222 garnets I sold earlier this week o3o), I'm usually blessed by the RNG gods to get 1k saved. Most of the time it's <500g in my bank xD. Which A) limits the content that I can run (which is what I really want to run) and B) restricts gear-heavy classes *cough crusader cough*
Anyone got any ideas as to what I can do? any suggestions for what I could play that might be fun? I don't want to have to live with 39 alts that have a mix of gear from various chars.

You'll just have to go with your gut. Every class has its strengths and weaknesses so people generally choose 2 different base class they like, and 1 is a main and the other is an alt.

Most ppl just choose a class based on superficial reasons, like the skills look f*ckin awesome, the character model/animations are f*ckin awesome, the class icon is f*ckin awesome, the concept of the class is f*ckin awesome.
if you choose a class solely for damage/usefulness then you probably wont last long on it, if you dont actually appreciate the basic parts that make the class unique. (Skills, model, concept).

but even then i get tilted if i only played the same class every day, its weaknesses come up and sometimes u just dont feel like dealing with the crappy aspects so thats when u hop on the alt

Definitely have to back up what ceruulean said. Trying to choose a main based on damage is more likely to make you quit faster, especially if you don't like how the class plays in the first place (hence why you dropped Black Mara as quickly as you did. Very powerful, but the playstyle wasn't to your liking). You main should definitely be a class that you really enjoy playing despite any weaknesses, while your alt should be a class you can easily switch to if your main's weaknesses will be a burden (ex: if your main excels at sustained DPS, your alt could be a burst DPS or support you like for content where sustained DPS is difficult to maintain).

Though I will say that you're kinda like me. I've got a good few characters at cap that I can play well enough and have some fun with, but I main a Gear Master (formerly a Lunar Knight main) because I really enjoy how effective she is when you get good enough at micromanaging her summons/debuffs/attacks. Lots of work, but having the ability to split my focus between two zones at the same time in Nightmare dungeon, or find the best place to set towers and exploit the boss's AI, really gives me the feeling I usually find in tactical RPGs when one of my plans successfully turns the battle in my favor. But for content/team comps where my Gear Master isn't as effective, I can easily switch to a Mechanic or my Lunar Knight to adapt to the situation.

As for gearing, you don't need NEARLY as much gear for all of your characters as you think. You'll still need a main/offhand for each character you gear obviously, but if you have at least one full set of STR/AGI/INT Neris armor and some gold, you can easily pass gear between your maxed alt characters (Elder Oracles made before the next update even get a full set of STR Neris equipment for free (still have to be enhanced, though), with the armor being just as useful when transferred to other STR-focused classes (even the weapons if you have a Dancer as well)). Obviously, Unique/Legend should be reserved for your main since, even if they can be transferred, it's very expensive to acquire full armor sets with each main stat + VIT, so only focus on what your main needs. And there are, of course, a few exceptions (ex: you don't want pure DPS for supports who want to avoid having the defensive power of tissue paper (Guardian and Saint being two good examples), and I definitely agree that Crusader is a pain in the ass to gear properly).

Well, I was mainly looking at 95-cap gear when I mentioned reserving U/L-grades for mains (since I'm pretty sure anything above 95 Epic can't be put into server storage). Though your suggestion is definitely better. The fact that it's locked at only using 93 gems is also a hidden blessing, as the better HP benefits with 93 main/VIT gems means you don't have to worry about whether or not your HP is in one-shot range so much. Only real issue is 93 non-L-grade conversion gems (not sure if there's still a way to obtain them outside of the marketplace) for classes that need them, since only 95 gems don't have the gear rank restrictions.

Hmm, I'm not sure where to find them... I got my conversion gems from the MP. But you can get level 90 conversion gems in the Garden of Eternity Nexus shop at the cost of IDN furies and RDN wraiths.

You mean the L-grades? non-95 L-grade gems require L-grade weapons, and can't be enhanced.

Also, an update on my main situation: I've decided I'll go one of the two Machinas. I can't decide between giant explosions or giant hands tho xd.
