How do you Activate 'switches' and 'cystals'?

So far when I see one I just beat the crap out of it and it will eventually activate. But I was wondering if there was an easier method?

Walk up to it and left click it: Switches
Murder it : Crystals

[ZeroSilver]

Crystal has certain super armor, not HP. Use your best super armor destroy skills.

For Silver Hunter, most DPS skills cannot one hit ctsytal. But transfer in the midair, which does little damage, one hit any Crystal.
