Mercenary not gaining experience when doing dungeons with pupil.

I've been doing the lvl 95 daily dungeons with my friend who I added as a pupil so we'd get mentor points while duoing, and I just started noticing that my merc isn't gaining any exp at all, their merc is though. The merc I am trying to lvl up is William, if you need to know. It was gaining exp just fine before I started doing dungeons with them, which is why it's currently lvl 18.
